We all know religious people are at least a little bit crazy, I mean… they do believe in imaginary sky people. However, there are quite a few who can live peacefully and let others live the way they want to live. Some on the other hand… not so much.
I came across this video while searching for those that can be classed as falling into the extreme ends of religious zealotry. For those of you who still live with your parents and enjoy Christmas but are ready to denounce your faith and join the world of reality; take this as a warning: do it after Christmas. It seems some parents just don’t want their children to be atheists.
I’m not sure what makes me more angry. Her reaction to her son being an atheist, or the fact that they turned the video off early. Ok, actually I do know and it’s definitely her reaction, but that rant is for another day.
Until then check out some Atheist Humor: Some of God’s Many “Cool Designs”.

atheist are just people who didn’t found *yet* a god (a + theos = without god but not against), so who care.
December 16th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Christmas is about Jesus. I back the mom totally. She’s a psycho hosebeast, but she has a point. Why celebrate the birth of Jesus if you don’t believe he’s the son of God?
Any atheist worth their salt wouldn’t participate anyways, unless they’re caught up in the whole consumerist scam of Christmas.
Basically, if you don’t believe in Jesus’ birth being something special, you have no business whining about pwesents, and any devout Christian has a right to tell you that.
December 16th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
what an awful woman. is this how christians talk to their children?
it is funny that she thinks christmas is about god and getting gifts.
December 16th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I participate in Christmas because despite it currently being a christian holiday it is still tradition in my family. I get time of from University, none of my friends or family have to work so that provides time to get together with everyone and have a good time.
Basically what I’m saying is I celebrate the holiday without having to include religion.
December 16th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Sean,
Please explain to me the biblical basis for SANTA CLAUS, CHRISTMAS TREES, and EXCHANGING GIFTS?
You can’t because Christmas is just a bunch of christianized pagan rituals. In the cases that Christians coulnd’t outright ban pagan practices, they absorbed or “christianized” them. People who call themselves Christians willfully ignore this.
December 16th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Um… Sean - you do know that giving presents, christmas trees, holly, baubles, halos are all Roman and pagan customs.. right?
http://www.simpletoremember.co.....lStory.htm
So really you have no right to tell anyone anything.
December 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Sorry Benoitc, “Atheos” is a greek root that means “godless”…there is nothing in the root that means “but not against”.
Sorry Sean, Christmas is NOT about Jesus.
Originally it was a celebration of the winter solstice and then it was stolen by those silly christians to attempt to snuff out other (i.e. pagan) religions.
Jesus was born in the SPRING (I think its been quoted as in march?)…look it up in that silly bible of yours.
The original Christmas was in fact “Christ’s Mass”, where you go to chruch and do nothing but pray and worship. Nothing about presents, and certainly nothing about being good to one another or spreading joy and cheer, etc.
DEFINITELY no joy or cheer…these are CHRISTIANS we’re talking about (just look at the reaction of the mom here who basically says: “You will believe or be punished”).
A Christian has NO RIGHT to be giving or getting gifts at all as Christ’s Mass is a time of WORSHIP, not celebration.
A Christian has NO RIGHT to decorate, or even having a christmas tree (the christmas tree was also a pagan tradtion, where people would bring pine boughs into their homes to attempt to preserve some of the life force they saw being buried under all that snow).
A Christian has NO RIGHT to celebrate christmas at this time anyways because they are actually participating in a Pagan holiday, which is against thier religion.
(This is all tongue in cheek of course, but I’m sure you get my drift…christians really have no room to talk or argue these points)
Christmas has become a TRADITION and a holiday. It is a time for forgiveness, joy, happiness, cheer, family, and celebration (not for Christ’s birth, but for anything you want…and don’t try to take that out of context…what do you celebrate on Columbus day? Or Halloween? Etc).
The world and society as a whole has EVOLVED (HA!) to the point where it really doesn’t need a god or jebus to have people be good to each other and spread some happiness.
So sorry Christians, Jesus is NOT the reason for the season…at least, not anymore.
December 16th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Wow, i remember years ago my parents having the same reaction to me not beleiving in god anymore.
As mentioned by others, celebrating christmas with your family has little to do with being a christian.
December 16th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Something reminding me of putting up the Christmas tree.
Jeremiah 10: 1-4
1. Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2. thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
As an Agnostic Theist, I have no issues with the religious praying, celebrating Christmas, etc. Religion is not to blame for the intolerance of it’s followers.
December 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
That video is fake, people!
December 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
While I agree she’s overreacted, in her mind her son is going to hell for an eternity. Try and exercise some empathy.
December 16th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Photoshopped. I can tell by the pixels.
December 16th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Charlie is right on this one. Any religious person who claims that christmas is solely about Jesus has not done their proper research. The date I recall reading was something like April 24th, since that was the time of the census mentioned in the related passages in the Bible.
Gift giving during the winter festival is not the exclusive province of religion. If you get bored, look up the origin of the phrase “Yuletide cheer” for more information.
December 16th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Props to the kid. He’s standing up for his beliefs even though (he probably expected to) take flak for it. He gains points for morality.
December 16th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
1. I’m a Christian.
2. No, not all of us act this way. Not anyone that I know anyway.
3. Is this video fake?
4. I think the last thing God would want is someone that didn’t believe pretending to believe. That doesn’t really help anyone.
5. Christmas has virtually nothing to do with Jesus. It does have a huge impact on retail sales however. So keep that in mind when deciding if you’ll buy presents for your Atheist friends.
6. Anyway, YOU have to believe. Nobody can make you. Since there is no evidence it’s not something arguing and yelling will solve because you can’t prove it. I’ll tell people why I believe, but after that they have to make their own decision and there’s not much you can do because forcing someone to pretend to believe isn’t going to get them saved anyway.
December 16th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
This video seems staged…. why else would the ‘mother’ turn the boy’s chair so the viewer would get a profile view of the two of them?
Looks very set up.
And why would anyone be videoing at the time?
It feels a little too ‘amateur theatre’. Try watching it with that in mind. Many people try to get their videos to go viral by being controversial. This looks like just another attempt.
December 16th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I’m not sure if it’s set up or not. The mother looks genuinely angry. It would appear she turns the chair to get in his face, since he’s sitting at the “bar” she’s unable to do that unless he turns him to face her.
The part that was curious was why would it be video taped. I figured it could be a friend or sibling. They probably would have known it was going to be a big deal… something to catch on tape haha.
December 16th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
My favorite part is “No presents for Christmas because Christmas is about Jesus Christ!”
Haha but seriously, religions are silly.
December 16th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
It’s not faked. I grew up in a very strict religious family, one where all the ethics of the home were based on the religion.
None of this felt out of place. It fit just right. It’s not something to do with the religion, but more to do with a histrionic mother and a complacent father.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
So, why is no one mentioning that christmas originated as a pagan holiday in the first place. Celebrating the birth of Mithra and the winter solstice. This lady is out of her mind.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
For anyone who seriously believes Jesus has anything to do with Christmas, well keep living in that fantasy land.
Do some research and stop letting your religion spoon feed you the information that you so happily devour.
Everything Christians think they believe is a total lie, right down to Jesus having a damn thing to do with Christmas.
Jesus isnt even the real Jesus, its John the baptist who started this whole christanity thing, hes the real Jesus if anything.

That Lady (mother) Is Super Messed Up
There’s no wonder the kid is messed up.
What kind of a Mother uses that language with their child.
Bad bad bad bad….
December 16th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
If this video was faked, it was faked by people with a very thorough knowledge of the way this kind of exchange would actually take place. Living on the internet permits us to forget what an incredibly small understanding of atheism most Christians have. I was raised in a big-city Christian household (with a grandfather who is a strict Anglican priest) and I’m not sure any individual in that family has knowingly met an atheist.
Allow me to be clear - this is not a stereotypical bible-thumping family. Their sense of ecumenical and inter-religious tolerance is very strong; I have a number of Jewish and Muslim friends whose needs are taken into account at family functions. My parents are not particularly devout Catholics, and my siblings are openly disdainful of the Church and all its practices. Atheism, however - that, to them, is a whole different ball game. My brother - an educated cynic who hasn’t attended church in ten years - once put it best: “Not being Christian is fine, but how do you not believe in God?”
To look at it another way: imagine your entire life is dedicated to baseball. Success in this game, you’re told, determines the entire course of your life. You might dislike the members of the other teams - you might even hate your own, and disagree with the way it’s been managed. But what about someone who doesn’t pick a team at all? What about someone who chooses not to play baseball?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
maybe my comments come from being raised catholic and disconnecting myself from christianity forcibly because i found it repulsive.
but in the end, the kid is living under her roof, she makes the rules.
it’s good to see that he’s standing up for what he believes in, and if he doesn’t get any presents, good on him for not participating in the consumerist sham christmas has become.
christian roots? pagan roots? christmas is still stupid.
December 17th, 2008 at 1:24 am
“but in the end, the kid is living under her roof, she makes the rules.”
So living under her roof means you MUST believe in a god? What a load of crap.
Living under her roof means she gets to berate and swear at a child because her son has a different belief than hers? Typical christian.
Why not just crucify the kid? Or kill him in SOME painful fashion…if she’s a true christian she has to kill him. I’m certain the bible says that somewhere, but I don’t have to time to look it up right now…
And afterall, she has a right to kill him…its her roof, and thus her rules.
“christian roots? pagan roots? christmas is still stupid.”
….as is pretty much anything Christian in nature.
December 17th, 2008 at 5:02 am
“So living under her roof means you MUST believe in a god? What a load of crap.”
not what i said.
just - if he’s living in a christian household, he should grow a pair and be a conscientious objector to his mom’s b.s.
show her - if “no presents” is the best bargaining chip she has, let the boy call the vindictive bitch’s bluff. if her beliefs are that weak - in that if she thinks giving presents is a crucial element to true christianity - then let the boy be a man and choose to not participate in that consumerist circle jerk.
December 17th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Ummmm….I’m pretty sure thats just what he did. I didn’t see him fall on the ground and start crying and begging for presents.
I’m pretty sure he said, “OK!”
December 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
yeah. i was mostly hoping the kid would stick to his guns with the “OK” and not give in to what appears to be an overbearing, crazy mother who appears to enjoy total control of her household.
i can foresee him caving and enduring a church-for-presents treaty until he moves out… but i guess the video doesn’t show that.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Any of you see that video recently where Bill O’Reilly claimed Christmas was a secular holiday?
His response to the whole Atheist Christmas Sign controversy has been really quite interesting. He’s taken the opposite approach to most religious commentators and argued that a) Atheism is NOT a religion, and that b) Christmas is NOT a religious holiday. He pointed to some Supreme Court ruling from the 50’s that I haven’t been able to track down. He even - and this was great - argued that Jesus was just a philosopher with whom a majority of the country agreed, and so we could honor the fact that this nation was founded on his philosophy. Isn’t that a kick?
We have, then, at least one conservative Christian arguing that Christmas has nothing to do with Christ. Except the name.
December 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
That’s quite interesting Free Radical! I’m gonna try to track that down.
December 17th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Free Radical you are just as ignorant as everyone else. Agreeing with your brothers statement “Not being Christian is fine, but how do you not believe in God?” proves it. How do you believe in god? You need to look at things objectively, which you are not, which makes you biased and thus your argument horse shit. Funny huh.

The Bible is a STORY, there is no way it is real!! How do so many people really believe that crap? Also, that mom is crazy. Religious people are full of crap. She sure seemed like a good role model.

Christmas is a secular holiday, created in a secular nation, not even the birth of any person in a religious book, the only people that are upset about this are fundamentalist Christians who want to ruin the USA and the world.
They should be removed immediately!
January 4th, 2009 at 9:13 pm

You can’t force anyone to believe in God…
The lady is crazy.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Noose,
These parents are idiots and belong on a television show about raising parents! No redeemed Christian would respond to anyone this specific way, let alone their own children. This is an example of the people I was talking about here: http://www.atheistmind.com/5-r.....y#comments.
These people identify themselves as Christians but demonstrate it by using extreme vulgarity directed at their minor child, decide that they are finally going to take their child to church every week (instead of preparing, not brainwashing, the child’s heart from birth) then they use a Christmas devoid of gifts to prove a point as to what Christmas is about! What!!!! Love begets compassion and understanding -anger begets frusteration and hate!
I agree with one of your commenteers- this video is probably bogus. Even if it’s not, do you honestly think that these parents really have a problem with Atheism or could it be a bit more introspective than that!
Either way, thanks for sharing this video!

ther is no god people!!! welcome to reality!
April 27th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
What a dumb bitch. Christmas is a National holiday that everyone gets time off work and school for, and since the constitution prevents the establishment of any official religious recognition, that makes it a secular holiday. BOOYAH!
Besides… as others have said.. most christian holidays are just stolen pagan holidays anyway… especially christmas and easter. You ever stopped to wonder what the resurrection has to do with bunnies and eggs? The answer is nothing, because easter is a Pagan holiday celebrating “fertility”.. It’s almost like, “have sex and make babies day”.

Its not so that pepole dont belive in god but the reason the regret from being atheistic it that they are too busy in their life.
November 18th, 2009 at 12:15 am
Christmas isn’t about Jesus, it is a collection of various pegan rituals. Last time I checked Jesus had nothing to do pine tree or a fat man in a red suit.
