Number 1: Trent Reznor (1965-)
Career: American Singer and Producer for Nine Inch Nails
Claim to Atheism: There are just some things that don’t seem very fair in the world, like this fucking hypocrisy of organized religion. I just don’t understand how people can blindly believe a bunch of the shit they’re fed, to believe it so that they don’t think too hard about other issues. ‘Be a good boy and you’ll go to heaven.’ If it works for you, fine, but it doesn’t work for me and that pisses me off because I kind of wish it did. (source unknown; mentioned in [Wikiquote]) Also evidence in his songs.

Keanu Reeves is not an athiest, he is Christian. Don’t rely on one wrong article, ok? The man plays Jesus in half of his films and he also plays Buddha in one. He has spoken about God in many interviews. Do some research homie.
January 1st, 2009 at 7:31 pm
hello, BRAD PITT is an atheist and is WAY hotter than ANY of these dudes.
“By the time he entered college, Pitt had scuttled his fundamentalist beliefs. “When I got untethered from the comfort of religion, it wasn’t a loss of faith for me, it was a discovery of self,” he says. “I had faith that I’m capable enough to handle any situation. There’s peace in understanding that I have only one life, here and now, and I’m responsible.”

February 28th, 2009 at 4:14 am
trent reznor is the hottest man alive, and my god (no, not really)
March 5th, 2009 at 1:01 am
Reeves is NOT a Christian you idiot. He used to follow Buddhism but has always alleged he was a agnostic with atheist views.
March 12th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Trent Reznor believes in a Higher Power…. or at least he had better come to believe in one soon… or he’ll continue “slipping”… AA just doesnt work without it… so I guess it is good that under all the anger and resentment he felt towards religion (but lets be honest and call it spirituality) he finally managed to unearth the Truth. That anger was just masking pain.. he wanted to believe as others did… and maybe now he can start building up to it.
HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAH
pins and needles
March 12th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
ohh right. Just to be pushy about it.
LISTEN to his lyrics… study it… “The Good Soldier” for example.
For a man who doesnt believe in God… “There’s no where left to hide, cause God is on our side” wooooo… figure that out.
March 16th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Danielle, the lyrics in “The Good Soldier” are supposed to be sarcastic. How can you not pick up on that? He’s making fun of Christians who think they’re so much better than everyone else. “This is just another case, you people still don’t know your place. Step aside, out the way, wipe that look off your face, ’cause we are the divine separated from the swine…” You’re an idiot if you think he’s being serious.
March 20th, 2009 at 1:24 am
Ummm….I think you have a lot of ‘views’ and ‘opinions’ on who’s atheist and who’s not. Just by reading your ‘resourses’, they’re vague and unsupported. It seems as if you’re going on your own theory, and for one thing, you have simple quotes. Second, where’s your links and resources to support your ‘quotes’? My beef is with you saying that Trent is an atheist. Even without doing extensive research, I know this not to be true. I’m a hard core fan of Trent’s for many years. I’ve read/heard/watched numerous interviews he’s done about many subjects. There’s a ton of issues that he’s AGAINST….politics, society ‘norms’ (i.e. “I never was a part of you” _Burn), religion (i.e “I sure wouldn’t wanna be praying to the wrong piece of ‘wood’”…God Given-Year Zero)…Trent’s style is of course one in a million. He loves to be a trouble maker for sure! So I think what you view as negative and ‘against’, I think is too harsh of a judgement. You have to take what Trent says with a grain of salt, but do take him seriously. He’s making a mockery of what the ‘normal’ people of society consider ‘normal’. Get it now? Hopefully I helped a bit, I’m not here to bash…I just get a lil bent when people put ‘labels’ on others just because….Have a great day
March 27th, 2009 at 5:38 am
Danielle: Not every recovering alcoholic goes to AA. Trent’s an atheist.
March 30th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
AA that introduces religion as a fix for alcoholism is a bunch of bullshit. You are basically not owning up to your own addictions and weaknesses and ‘blaming’ it on god, or giving the responsibility of your actions up to god/devil and their influences on you. AA that includes religion is just trading one dependency(alcohol)for another(religion or AA itself.) They are telling people that they are too weak to overcome things themselves, taking their own power away from them, and telling them that the only way to overcome any real adversity is to put all power and faith into a higher being such as god(AKA invisible fairy dust and puppet strings.) There are people who have been sober for 20 years and still go to AA because they feel they still have that weakness in them, and that god and their AA group is the only thing keeping themselves from going back. Get some self confidence, you did this to yourself and pulled yourself out of it, not some god who, if he was so compassionate, wouldn’t have given you the issue to begin with.
I really enjoyed this list, thanks a lot. What Trent said about wishing the ‘ignorance’ of religion worked for him applies a lot to how I think as well. I come from a very religious background, and as I’ve come into my own, I find I occasionally miss the ’safety’ of believing in god. It sometimes feels like there is too much unknown, and with believing in god, you ‘know’ that everything you do in life isn’t for nothing, because you are working for the greater good so you can get on god’s good side and get all the glories that you will not get here. But, I’d rather be ‘lost’ and following my own feelings then blindly following some self-proclaimed prophet who talks to god. As far as I know, most people who hear voices end up in padded rooms, not in front of a pulpit.
Born and raised Mormon, self-proclaimed Atheist since 2004.
March 30th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the list
I agree, it would be nice to believe that a loving god is watching over us and that I’d have a never ending life of happiness after this one… but there’s too much in this world (including the bible) that tells me that that is not the case and that religion is simply man-made, most likely largely out of a fear of the unknown.
March 30th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
What’s that one saying… let’s see if I remember it correctly… Oh yeah. Ignorance is Bliss. Ah to be religious and happy again, because I so totally am miserable right now, you know, with running water, electricity, air conditioning, a new car, a paying job in this economy, three meals a day, no health problems, a husband, a 2 year old son, a place to live, and even a computer to waste my time with. God is really punishing me hard for being such a wicked non-believer.
Lol
I didn’t know about a lot of these atheists, I looked at the female list too. This blog site is pretty cool, I just got done looking around and I’ll have to keep an eye on it.
Oh yeah, I live about 35 miles away from Maynard’s hometown. The Puscifer in Jerome is awesome. Bet you’re so totally jealous.
lol
March 30th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Ugh, you wouldn’t believe how jealous I am! Maynard is my hero. I really wanted to go to Puscifer’s opening concert in Las Vegas a month or so back but couldn’t work it around school since it was during exam period
Seems every time Tool is close too something always gets in the way - work or school
Some day though
Thanks for the comment!
April 2nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
so you think that you are smarter then Albert Einstein? He believe in God.
April 2nd, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Not in the sense that religious people believe in God… his writings are in the “the Portable Atheist” by Christopher Hitchens.
“I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it”
- Albert Einstein, in a letter March 24, 1954
April 2nd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Good try though
April 5th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
God is dead
And no one cares
If there is a Hell
I’ll see you there
Trent’s own words. Also Keanu, for all he’s worth, is fucking gorgeous. Nice placement.
April 6th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Seems kinda pointless to even have this article. I’m not here to say you are right or wrong for your views on religion, but I’m just curious as to why you even have this list. If there is no God, why spend another minute glorifying your dis-belief? Why would you really care? I seriously wonder if you all just flat out don’t buy it or you are very angry at it from an unfortunate experience(which is very common, unfortunately). I’m guessing the ladder.
Again, not saying you are right or wrong, just something for you to think about. It’s helped me understand and clarify things.
BTW, I’m afraid Maynard and Trent’s views aren’t quite as cut and dry as you would all like to think.
April 6th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
This list was just meant to be a fun article. It was not meant to glorify my dis-belief or bash religion.
As for your question - I just flat out don’t buy religion. If I believed in god, then there would be hundreds of reasons for me to be angry at him - but since I don’t, there is no anger.
Maynard’s and Trent’s views aren’t cut and dry on anything and I would never hope to understand them or their lyrics to the extent that they do - again this was just meant for a break from seriousness, so if I’m not 100% correct… then that’s ok with me.
April 9th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
no
maynard is christian now, and we all know why he wasnt at first.
update your shit

I seriously hope you aren’t referring to the april fools joke a couple years back JC. If not, I’d like to know where you got this info?
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Just because someone doesn’t believe in religion doesn’t make them an atheist.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:48 am
To Danielle: My brother, with whom I am very close, does not believe in God or a “higher power” and attends several AA meetings a week as a recovering alcoholic. You do NOT have to believe in god or any particular religion in order for the 12 steps to make sense or work for you. Not to mention that Trent Reznor has NEVER publicly spoken about what he did to treat his addictions. So you can step right off of that soapbox there.
Also, what Hayley responded about “God Given” is correct - it’s sarcasm. Lots of it!
To the others who think they know exactly what the above people believe - you have no idea, I have no idea. Only they have the exact knowledge of that. All of the people mentioned here are complicated, intelligent, creative, thoughtful individuals. Beliefs generally reflect one’s personality. I would never presume anyone’s beliefs to be simple or straightforward, and I don’t think this article, or its author, means to do that.
Noose, I like your choices and the article! Nice job!
May 6th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
How come you forgot GREG GRAFFIN?? Is there any reason for you to not put him in your list? Maybe you think he´s not sexy, but everybody knows how atheist he is. In my humble opinion he´s the sexiest man alive.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
God is dead and no one cares etc. etc.
Was not written by Trent, it was written by Nietzsche, look him up.
Also in relation to the God Given lyrics and lyrics in general, who says they have to be the actual opinion of the singer, they can be the thoughts of a fictional figure, and unless Trent found a way to live in his Year Zero world which is in the future, then it’s not Trent speaking.
May 12th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Thank you! I kept thinking that while reading the quotes. Also Buddhism is not a religion. The Buddha is not a deity, just a man professing a better way to live.
May 15th, 2009 at 10:42 am
Either way, Trent Reznor just keeps getting better and better as time goes on. He’s #1 celeb. in my book; glad to see he’s #1 on your list too.
May 28th, 2009 at 6:58 am
I love Nine Inch Nails with a passion, but I believe saying Trent Reznor is an atheist is pushing it. He doesn’t believe in organized religion, but that isn’t to say that he doesn’t hold personal beliefs that could, arguably, be considered religious (or at least spiritual). He uses his music to vent his anger with religion, sure (Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, Heresy, Right Where It Belongs, God Given, Starfuckers Inc., etc.), but only one of his songs that I’m familiar with, Heresy, denounces religion with absolutism. The rest of his songs criticize the organized and fiscal aspects of it. I believe he wrote Heresy as a provocative piece to represent a fleeting feeling he had. “The Downward Spiral” as a whole is a caricature of Reznor, not a portrait. Whether he truly believes there is no God, I can’t say.
Listening to his music closely over a period of several years, giving each album at least a dozen+ listens, I’m betting Reznor is a spiritual man. No way to know for certain, but to simply say that he is an atheist is unfair. I doubt he’d refer to himself as an atheist.

Derren Brown and Hugh Laurie = two of the sexiest men alive. xxxx
Though that Cillian Murphy, whoever he is, looks gorgeous too….
July 18th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Derren should CLEARLY be number 1!! Get it sorted
And Beth, Cillian is an actor…28 Days Later and Red Eye?
July 18th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I don’t know much about Bruce Willis but just judging from the evidence put there that he is an Atheist, I’m not sure he is.
All that really shows is that he doesn’t follow modern religion or take the Bible literally. It doesn’t show that he doesn’t believe in a God though.
I’m an Atheist by the way.
July 18th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Keanu Reevesis Buddhist. Don’t take my word for it, take his.

relax people! there are a million ways to interpret even a definite statement like “I don’t believe in god”. Some of these people have to make a living from the highly intolerent(of atheists) Americans.
Being vague and hinting at a lack of belief may be their only way to partly express their own views while still leaving room for interpretation as holding a belief by theists.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:56 am
Hate to break it to ya, but Maynard is not an atheist. Anti-organized religion, but not an atheist.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:45 pm
If Maynard is an atheist, you’d sure have a hard time explaining lyrics such as this:
“This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me
Its Source is bright and endless
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without Her, we are lifeless satellites drifting”
July 23rd, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Okay, so this topic creates a bit of controversy. Let me just say that the reason why it is complicated to know whether or not someone is an atheist or not is because there are different definitions of ‘god’ and the most culturally common ones are often considered to be the only definition, besides that our current wider understanding of the concept of ‘god’ is completely stupid. Buddhism is not a religion that promotes the idea of god, neither is Hindu mysticism, as both are more conceptually sophistcated and demand less insecure followers (they are more genuine) than the very tyrannous and misunderstood religion known as Christianity (which is little different from Islamic fundamentalism. My background in graduate-level philosophy and psychology has meant that I have studied this topic a lot from different angles. Let me say this once and for all, the ONLY concept of ‘god’ (and bear in mind that the great psychologist of religion Alan Watts said “the religious notion of ‘God’ does not do full duty to the metaphysical infinity) that makes a shred of sense is the panENtheistic one. According to this view what we basically refer to as ‘god’ interpenetrates all of nature but also timelessly extends beyond nature. This is the closest East religion gets to a divine principle, this concept of god, and many obscure metaphors in these religions refer to this kind of a deity. I have little doubt that the origins of Christianity are no different from the origins of these religions, you have to understand that words and mistranslations and misinterpretations CRITICALLY obscure and destroy the original meaning. For instance, when Jesus supposedly said “I and my father are one” what he meant was that there is no such thing as separateness, that god IS nature and every expression in existence is god at play within different realities in a way that only those occult and psychedelic adepts (Buddha, Gurdjieff, Jesus? etc) who reach higher states of consciousness can understand. This panentheistic concept of god is the only one that makes philosophical sense, and the only one that is logically possible, and the only one that is congruent with quantum mechanics (in quantum mechanics everything is interconnected [ONE entity with infinite manifestations in different worlds and dimensions] and this world is an illusion and nothing more than an illusion). This world, in other words, does not exist independently of our minds, the theory is called the ‘transmission theory of the brain/ consciousness, we create the world in the act of perception, this is basic science but we are mostly unconscious of this so we go our whole lives without realising such an important thing. Not only that but our ordinary state of consciousness can be transcended at any time such that we can merge into a higher dimension of mind (mind is the divine principle in panentheism that is multi-dimensional), but only a limited number of people have the emotional and literary intelligents to achieve this without freaking out and thinking that they are dieing. Okay, one more thing I was mention about panentheism is that A. It is the ONLY concept of ‘god’ is not separate from all beings and that cannot be opposed the way atheists oppose god, since GOD is EVERYONE and EVERYTHING (how can you oppose the existence of yourself?), and B. This explains why suffering persists despite there being a divine principle at the core of conscious experience. This is because if you wish suffering on yourself you have made the pre-decision to endure it in this lower dimension, therefore there is no external GOD causing you hell on this planet, it is simply the higher dimensional intelligence that you are part of, necessarily. Also, suffering only existence because of ignorance, our brains force our consciousness to forget about our true divine nature, therefore we think we are separate and alone and a victim of circumstances, when really, if we were fully conscious beings, we would realize that god is not an angry finite object-like being (like a man, how sexist!), but a creative higher principle of intelligence that is indesribable, interpenetrating, and full if unconditional love (undconitional means that it loves everything unconditionally no matter what it is or has done [its doesn't judge] since everything is IT in a lower dimensional form. The real divine principle is not male or female, it has both feminine and masculin archetypal properties, Maynard James Keenan knows this, and the feminine properties are the most encouraging, thats why he says “without her we are all lifeless satellites drifting”, also panentheism is why he sings “if you crucify the ego (confined individualist perspective) you will come to find that we are all ONE mind capable of all thats imaginaed and all conceivable”.
THE END

You forgot the hottest atheist of all: Joaquin Phoenix. (Actually, he’s the second hottest atheist to Cillian Murphy). Great work on the list (although for some I’m sure there are hotter ones)
July 28th, 2009 at 4:13 am
One more hot atheist celebrity: Brad Pitt
August 11th, 2009 at 2:34 am
Hugh Laurie and The Noose. I agree, they are hot. Should I forward this link to all female objectivists?

Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Atheism can be either the rejection of theism,or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities.
So although Buddhism has no deity it does have the ritual observances and Buddha is treated by some followers as though a god even though Buddha who was just a man would not have liked this.
Atheism says god or gods are created by humans and not the other way round. Therefore atheism is not a religion. Everyone is an athesist to some god or other. A christian believes in their God but not the Norse god Thor. A muslim in Allah but not the Hindu god Ganesh. When you work out why you believe in your god and reject the others you will understand why an atheist has gone one god further. God or gods are created by humans to have power over other humans.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:46 am
This is a very intriguing and interesting list. My celebrity crushes like Keanu Reeves and Guy Pearce are even included here. I am now moved to read certain of their works, if they have any, to see what they can say about this matter. If they are vocal about their stand, they must have something to say.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Thinking and sexiness? You’re the cutest of the lot.
October 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Bruce Willis is a Lutheran.
November 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
I guess it’s because you lot are american that being an atheist is considered such a big deal. Over here in europe, most of the intelligent well known people are atheists. Religion is pretty much dead outside of backward places like 3rd world countries and the USA. It does sadden me to read some of the obviously brainwashed comments but I think given enough time and exposure to actual evidence (rather than sunday school) these people will learn to think for themselves.
December 25th, 2009 at 6:17 am
I don’t understand why people make such a big deal about all this religion shit.
January 4th, 2010 at 8:11 am
Pfft.
Even at sixty-something, I still think Richard is the sexiest atheist. But that’s just my opinion. At any rate, I think he’s probably the world’s most prolific atheist.
March 27th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
In regard to whether or not Trent is an atheist, he isn’t. There’s an old article in SPIN magazine from the early 90s(I wish I still had a link to it) where he admits that while he is no longer religious in any way, he is still spiritual and does in fact believe that God exists. I think quite a few people misinterpret his anger towards organized religion as atheism. If anything, I’d say that Trent is most likely a Deist.
May 7th, 2010 at 1:06 am
“I believe in Spinoza’s God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings.” (Albert Einstein)
Einstein was a deist if he were religious at all.
May 11th, 2010 at 7:39 am
Here’s the Reznor article DarthMuppet referenced:
http://nothing.nin.net/int3.html
“I believe in god,” he says. “I was brought up going to Sunday school and church, but it didn’t really mean anything. Things upset me a lot. It was just a theme I kept coming back to-religion, guilt and doubting. I believe there’s a god but I’m not too sure of his relevance.”
So yeah, he’s a deist, which is what I had guessed prior to running a Google search on it.
May 26th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Seriously, how can so many Americans still believe in a God/ be religous. There must be something seriously wrong with your education. How ironic that America is fighting a war against Islamic fundamentalists when they’re just as bad. Americans.. go live in Iran or with the Taliban is you think religion is so great.
As for the person that said “atheism is a religion” lol. i think it is you that is the moron.
Look up the word Atheism in the dictionary - a belief that god does not exist.
Now look up religion - the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power esp. a personal God or Gods.
How can atheism (god does NOT exist) be a religion (God DOES exist)!?? That’s called a contradiction! Idiot.
